A small spring residency for artists willing to be a little uncomfortable, and curious about what that does to the work.
Each spring we invite a very small number of artists to live and make work at the LAND. The mornings are spent outside, alongside the people who tend this place: opening the acequia, pruning and grafting in the orchard, planting the chile and saffron trial, building the walipini on the south slope, walking the beaver ponds.
The afternoons and nights belong to the work. There is no audience, no programme of talks and very little signal. That is the point. The wind decides some days. The cold at dawn is real. Then the stove is lit, the room is quiet and the stars come out over Pedernal, and something in the work tends to slow down and get truer.
Georgia O'Keeffe painted Cerro Pedernal again and again and asked for her ashes to be scattered on it. Ancestral Tewa farmers built gravel-mulch fields on these slopes centuries before her. The acequia that still waters the orchard has run since 1807.
We are not a school and we do not hand out a curriculum. We offer time, a place to work, the land itself and a few people who know it well. What you make of that is yours.
Small by design.Shaped person by person.
Residencies take place in spring 2027, for part of the season. The cohort is very small and chosen by hand. Applications are read as they arrive and the cohort closes when it is full.
Living and working arrangements, the length of stay and the terms of each residency are discussed individually with every artist we invite. We would rather begin with a conversation than a contract.
